Substitute for rubber cement?

Can one use Rubber Cement instead of a Decoupage Medium to Decoupage. If not, are there any alternative recipes for a Decoupage like medium?

Some adhesives work better than others. The problem with bleed through of the paper. I have used white glue with some success as long it is used sparingly. Also the fumes from the rubber cement can interfere with the stains and sealers used in Decoupage. Water based adhesives work best.

Sarah gave us her opinion: 

For the decoupage question. try white glue and water. like... 2 parts glue to 1 part water. or maybe even less. its just like buyin hodge podge.
